Our Team – Julia (Julie) Pile
Julia (Julie) Pile is a business women, small entrepreneur, community connector and education advocate.
She has been married to her husband John for 21 years and has a daughter, Sophia, who is a Freshman at University of Kentucky and a son, Joseph, who is in Junior at Boone County High School. Her children have attended Boone County Schools their entire lives.
Julie has a passion to bring families, schools and the community together for the success of all of our students. She goes by the philosophy that we are all better when we work together. Building relationships, supporting each other and sharing our experiences to help one another. Julie is a firm believer in transparency, which is why during her current term as chair of the Board of Education, she made it a priority to revamp, document and open up the the committee process. Due to this work, additional stakeholders now have a voice on committees – students, families, community members, teachers and staff.
Working full time as an administrator at a medium sized law firm and a new parent of a kindergartner, started Julie down the path of becoming involved in the schools. She began volunteering her time building the PTA’s website. Eventually she moved into the role as Treasurer and served as the school’s PTA President for two years.
She was invited by another parent to participate in the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence‘s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership in 2012 and her passion for parent engagement was ignited. She has served on numerous school and district committees along with being on the Camp Ernst Middle School’s SBDM Council for the 2017-2018 academic year.
In 2016, along with educators and other parents from across the United States, Julie started the non-profit ParentCamp, Inc. ParentCamp brings parents, guardians, mentors, grandparents, teachers, administration, staff, and community members together in facilitated conversations to encourage all parties have a voice and learn from each other. ParentCamp is a partner with the United States Department of Education where six ParentCamps have been held. Julie and her collogue Laura Gilchrist travel across the country training school teams in the transformational family-school-community engagement model which they developed.
Julie served on the Boone County School Board from 2018 to 2022. She constantly provides opportunities for parents in Northern Kentucky to connect to resources and build relationships with each other. When the GROWNKY Collaborative reached out to her to assist in helping parents learn of opportunities available for students, she jumped at the opportunity to provide it ParentCamp style. Over 100 families participated in the ParentCampNKY – College and Career edition virtual event in September of 2021 that a second one was offered in January of 2022. Julie was selected to be an inaugural recipient of the Ed Trust Fund’s Family Fellowship program which focuses on advocating for educational equity. In 2017, Julie was selected by the Prichard Committee for her ongoing and tireless work in the family and community engagement arena to receive the inaugural Beverly Nickels Raimondo Parent Leadership Award, named in honor of the found of the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership program.
In 2020, ParentCamp was approached by the US Department of Health & Human Services – Association for Children and Families to help them think of ways to “radicalize” family engagement. The work culminated in a week long event which engaged various stakeholders through a series of week long events. Julie and ParentCamp were honored to be asked to kick off the week ParentCamp style. Over 200 participants in multiple languages engaged in over 20 rooms with various topics in facilitated dialogue. The work of the week was highlighted in Radical Family Engagement Journey Map published by ACF.
