A Step Back in Time with Hearty Comfort Food
My second visit to Jessop’s Tavern was just as memorable as the first—and honestly, it’s becoming one of those places I look forward to going back to again and again.
The first time around, I had the fish and chips (a classic, and done really well), but this visit I tried the Fricken Chicassee—and wow, it was absolutely delicious. Comfort food at its best, rich and flavorful, and something I would definitely order again without hesitation.
Fair warning: the portions here are no joke. They are large. Both times I’ve gone, friends ordered the shepherd’s pie, and it is HUGE—like, come hungry or plan for leftovers kind of huge. And if you’re thinking about dessert… do it. On my first visit, we splurged on the Dutch apple cakes, and they were the perfect sweet ending.
Beyond the food, the experience is what really sets this place apart. Nestled in New Castle, the whole area feels like stepping into another era. The uneven brick streets, the charm of the small downtown—it all adds to the atmosphere before you even walk in the door.
Inside the tavern, it’s everything you’d hope for in a colonial-style spot. Think replica ships, uneven wood floors, candles flickering in the fireplace, pewter dishes, and tables and chairs that look like they’ve been there for centuries. It genuinely feels like you’ve stepped back in time, and it makes the meal feel like more than just dinner—it’s an experience.
If you’re anywhere nearby and looking for a place with character, history, and seriously good comfort food, Jessop’s Tavern is absolutely worth the visit.
