Something as simple as a coaster..an unexpected reminder of a loved one

The past two days my 12 year daughter has come home from school and decided to do some organizing.  Yesterday, after my daughter went on her organizing binge, I stopped up to see her handy work. In the middle of the floor was a simple plastic & cork coaster.  I picked it up, thought for a moment of where it might have come from and it dawned on me at how this obscure item made it into our house.

That little coaster is probably 20 years old and traveled 200 miles as a stow-away.  In 2014 my mom passed away from a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia.  Anyone who has had a loved one with this horrible disease knows that often the person afflicted will move items around their home or put them away anywhere.  Well, this coaster was one of those items.  She must have picked it up, put it in a box that eventually made its way to our house.  The unexpected find brought a smile to my face remembering her.

The coaster, probably not worth more than a cent, is now sitting on my desk so that it is next to me as I work away throughout the day.  It may seem silly, but I know my mom is with me, encouraging me to keep going, pursuing my dreams.  Thanks for being there mom.
